Zoo Hannover, Germany

Zoo Hannover is one of Hannover’s most popular visitor attractions. The 22-hectare zoo was established in 1865, and today houses more than 3,000 animals, made up of 247 species.

More than 1.6 million people visit the zoo each year to see the seven unique theme worlds. In the African Zambezi landscape, you can take a riverboat trip, or visit Hippo Canyon. Animals include flamingos, zebras, lions, gazelles, rhinos, meerkats, giraffes and hippos.

Gorilla Mountain is a 58 metre high hill, set within a forest landscape, that is home to 11 gorillas. Here you can also see gibbons, smallest of the apes.

The Indian Jungle Palace recreates a maharajah’s palace that has been left to nature. Expect to see elephants, tigers, leopards, hanuman langurs and giant snakes ruling the roost here.

You can also visit the Australian Outback zone, which takes you to the heart of Australia, where you’ll meet kangaroos, cockatiels, Rosella parakeets and red-rumped parrots.

Yukon Bay explores the canyons, forests and small towns of Canada, with wolves, caribou, snowy owls, polar bears, seals and penguins among the creatures found here.

Also at the zoo is Meyer’s Farm, which recreates a historic Lower Saxony farm and contains some rare old domestic breeds. Meanwhile, Mollywoop children’s land includes a petting meadow with sheep, goats, alpacas and chicken, a mouse house, and a playground with bouncy castle.
