Royal Ascot: Have you been?

For fans of horse racing, there are few race meetings that surpass the Royal Ascot.  For horse racing events in London, there is no need to look any further than this famous race.  The race itself dates back to 1711 when Queen Anne founded the first race.  Since then it has always been attended by the royal family and the race day itself has become a major event in the British social calendar, with much attention given to the various dresses worn by the most prestigious guests.  Due to its location in Berkshire, very close to London and Heathrow, the race has become increasingly popular with overseas visitors. If you are a first timer in the racing world, here are the top tips for visiting the race course:

Know what to wear

During normal race days, depending on what enclosure you are in, there may be a requirement for smart clothing; shirt, tie and jacket for men, and a dress for ladies.  During the royal event, there are specific rules on clothing.  For example, if you are lucky enough to be in the royal enclosure then hats are required.  Be sure to check out the website to make sure that you have appropriate clothing for the day of your visit.

Know how to bet

Go with a set budget of how much you intend to spend on betting.  Have a look beforehand at the runners and try to pick up any tips from the internet or newspapers.  If you are unfamiliar, find out the difference between backing a horse to win and an each way bet.  The more prepared you are, the more you will be able to relax and enjoy the atmosphere.

Book your table

There are fantastic and delicious fine dining options available at the course.  However, places fill up quickly, especially during the more popular race days.  Make sure that you avoid disappointment and book your preferred dining option well in advance.  Choose from eating in the restaurant or maybe for that extra special experience, hire a private box to watch the races and place your bets in style.
