How to Celebrate Australia Day in London

Winter Market

Whether you’re Australian or simply have a particularly strong affinity for the land Down Under, you’re sure to have January 26th marked down firmly in your calendar.

This is because it’s the date of the annual Australia Day celebrations, which commemorate the first landing in Australia by Captain Arthur Phillip back in 1788. Australians take this opportunity to proudly fly their flags, attend festivals and firework displays and participate in sporting events or BBQs at home, in parks or on beaches.

It always takes place on January 26th, no matter what day this falls on, and is celebrated in cities across the globe.

London is no exception and ex-pats, Aussies abroad on holiday and Brits alike will be able to join in with the festivities to mark this truly international celebration.

What’s on?

Australia Day Craft Beer Festival

Head to Hackney’s Oval Space for Aussie beer, inflatable sharks, sandwiches and all manner of other Antipodean offerings as the venue goes all out for this national day. You’re sure to feel patriotic even if you’ve never set foot in the southern hemisphere.

Australia Day at Comedy Carnival

If you like to be entertained by excellent comedy, then look no further than Comedy Carnival on Shaftesbury Avenue. It will be marking Australia Day with a night of stand-up from top Aussie comedians, including John Robertson, Colin Cole, Alice Fraser and Pete Jonas. The night starts at 8pm and goes on until 10pm, but you can continue to nearby Bar Rumba for a party night afterwards.

Australia Day at The Church

Start the party early with The Church’s Australia Day celebrations on January 22nd, which will take place at The Coronet between 2pm and 8pm. There will be plenty of amber nectar on offer and ticket prices include free entry to Belushi in London Bridge if you want to keep partying afterwards.
